Historians believe the first candles were used sometime around 3000 B.C.. The Romans get the credit for the first wicked candles. They used a flax thread and coated it with wax and pitch. Some used palm oil, coconut oil, and olive oil. This type of candle smoked alot and the odor was not very pleasant.
At some point in time, tallow became the candle makers choice. They found that animal fat could be melted down, forming a liquid and used to make candles.
It was not until the 1800's that paraffin was used for candle making. Paraffin is a derivative of fossil fuel. Paraffin wax was the least expensive of all the candle ingredients, so it became the industry standard.
In 1820 braided wicks were developed allowing a uniform wick for different size candles. The discovery of stearic acid (which when added to pariffin hardens the wax) allowed for a longer burn time in candles.
By the mid 19th century, candle making became industrialized, due to the invention of a machine that allowed continuous molding of candle wax.
After the invention of the light bulb in the late 1800's, candle making and its use started to decline.
Today the popularity of candles has soared. Candles symbolize celebration, mark romance, accent decor and are used in religious ceremonies the world over.
